All shit known about the PSP goes here.

LOS ANGELES, May 11, 2004 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today the product specifications for the handheld video game system, PlayStation®Portable (PSP™), three-dimensional-CG games incorporating high-quality, full-motion video similar to PlayStation®2 can be played anytime, anywhere with PSP. PSP is scheduled to be launched in Japan in the end of 2004, followed by the North American and European launches in the spring of 2005.
PSP comes in a black color, with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD centered in a sleek ergonomic design with a high-quality finish that fits comfortably in the hands. The dimensions are 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260g. PSP features a high-quality TFT LCD that displays full color (16.77 million colors) on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen. It also comes complete with the basic functions of a portable player such as built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone connector, brightness control and sound mode selection. Keys and controls inherit the same operability of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2, familiar to fans all over the world.
PSP also comes equipped with diverse input/output connectors such as USB 2.0, and 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless LAN, providing connectivity to various devices in the home and to the wireless network outside. The world of gaming is further enhanced by enabling users to enjoy online gaming, or by connecting multiple PSPs to each other, directly via the wireless network. In addition, software and data can be downloaded through a USB or wireless network onto Memory Stick™ PRO Duo. All of these features can be enjoyed on one single system.
PSP adopts a small but high-capacity optical medium UMD™ (Universal Media Disc), enabling game software, rich with full-motion video and other forms of digital entertainment content, to be stored. The newly developed UMD, the next-generation compact storage media, is only 60mm in diameter but can store up to 1.8GB of digital data. A broad range of digital entertainment content such as music video clips, movies and sports programs can be provided on UMD. To protect this entertainment content, a robust copyright protection system has been developed which utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID, a 128 bit AES encryption keys for the media, and individual ID for each PSP hardware unit.
SCEI intends to aggressively promote PSP and UMD as the new handheld entertainment platform for the coming era.

I think the cost was around $300 for now. But if they want to compete with the Nintendo DS (im getting) ... They may wanna cut the price ... Im gonna say to about $200.
Xycron
Can hook up to an XBOX through the same method it can to a PS2
Dagster
that looks so kool. I hope its as good as people say it is.
BWSword
well the game finally came out to those who got one. What you guys think? I haven't got mine yet but just wondered?
LiquidViper
When it goes under $300 and has a battery life longer than 3-4 hours, I'll get one.
Steelbreze
Retails for $250

Sony announced that if there are any dead pixels on your screen they wont replace it because they dont consider that to be a defect.
Pisces
^ This infact is a lie/halftruth that was started to decrease sales.
I can vouch for the following paragraphs due to my own call to 1-800-SONY this morning in regards to my PsP and Dead Pixels.
-----------
Soon after the PSP launched in Japan last December, reports began to surface that some units' LCD screens suffered from pixels that were either permanently light or dark. Within 24 hours of the portable's North American launch, similar complaints began to reverberate around the Internet. The locus of the complaints was, ironically, the official PlayStation forums, which was temporarily down yesterday following heavy traffic.
Some gamers' outrage over the perceived issue was fueled by an e-mail allegedly sent out by Canadian game retailer Video Games Plus. The e-mail said the company was "informed by Sony that they will not be warranting any dead pixel units. They are only warranting hardware defects ie [sic] broken buttons, malfunction with drive, and so on."
An informal survey of the dozen-odd PSPs in the GameSpot offices found half had at least one pixel that stayed white or dark constantly. While these dots were almost all invisible while playing games, they did stand out when displayed against a black or white screen.
While commonly referred to as a "defect," Sony says the off-colored pixel problem is common in all LCD screen. "A very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels is normal for LCD screens, and is not a sign of a malfunction," a representative for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) told GameSpot.
Page 13 of the PSP manual puts it this way: "Red, blue, or green spots (bright spots) or black spots (dark spots) may appear in certain locations on the LCD screen. The appearance of such spots is a normal occurrence associated with LCD screens and not a sign of malfunction. LCD screens are made using highly precise technology. However, a very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels exist on each screen." The manual also warns against exposing the LCD screen to direct sunlight and leaving still images on the screen for an extended period of time, as both could damage the display.
The Sony rep suggested PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue to try the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them. "If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP] warranty," the rep said. Each PSP comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is "determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the "repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or refurbished product at SCEA's option."
According to a technical support associate contacted by GameSpot, PSP owners who encounter a persistent and aggravating dead-pixel issue should contact SCEA's customer service line (1-800-345-7669) for instructions on how to exchange their unit after a week or two of using the unit. "We will work with you," he assured. The associate said the process would work much like exchanging PlayStation 2s that suffer from the dread "Disc Read Error" problem: Gamers will mail their PSPs in to SCEA and receive units with new screens. The associate was unsure if the customer would receive an all-new unit or their old unit with a new LCD screen.

I picked up/bought a PSP on launch day(March 24th).... along with Metal Gear Ac!d and Twisted Metal Head-On.
So far I'm pretty amazed at this nifty little handheld from Sony...... I'm not that worried about battery life, even if its only 3-4 hours.... It really depends what you're doing with your PSP tho, and if you're using any of the power saver settings in its menu. Like haviing it dim the backlit light after so and so many minutes, and having the PSP automatically go into sleep mode to conserve power... etc...
But damn..... the PSP is soo neat!! Its dashboard/menu/browser or whatever..... its soo much more sophisticated and loaded with options.... compared to the PS2/Gamecube/Nintendo DS/Xbox dashboards.......
I got a Nintendo DS as well..... and I have to say i prefer the PSP 100 times over the DS........ Not to say that the DS sucks.... but its got a very shitty game lineup at the moment.... The PSP already has some decent games out.
Vinney
Blasphemy!
LONG LIVE THE N! LONG LIVE THE N!
-=[xeriak]=-
believe it or not..... the PSP has more techy prowess over the Nintendo DS...... period.
I guess the DS is more appropriate for the casual on the go gamer, or for kids.....
The PSP is for serious enthusiasts..... like mp3 freaks.... movie freaks and for gamers that want a near PS2 level portable handheld.
LiquidViper
DAMN SONY! I went ahead and pre-ordered one with Lumines.......and when it comes in I'm getting Twisted Metal and Darkstalkers........DAMN THE LUMINES THAT I HAVE TO HAVE!
Pisces
lumines makes my ass itch
BWSword
you would pick lumines over games like Twisted Metal and Darkstalkers man...what so great about lumines?
Vinney
Here's my thing....I don't care about mp3s or movies...I care about games....aaaaaand....Nintendo does games well....
Iron_DragonLord
The PSP flopped, face it.
It only appeals to casual gamers, although they make up most of the gaming market, aren't interested in paying that much for a handheld. Plus considering casual gamers, it's likely they already have audio players and possibly video players (a friend of mine already does).
No doubt, though, that Sony will release a second or different version of the PSP. Likely similar to how they did with the new PS2. (Fix the flaws, take out some features, maybe add some in, make it cost the same as the PSP but drop the price for the PSP...)
LiquidViper
you would pick lumines over games like Twisted Metal and Darkstalkers man...what so great about lumines?
I was planning on getting those with Lumines anyways.
And yeah, Nintendo does games well, but there isn't shit on DS right now. The only two games Ive seen on DS that I want are Viewtiful Joe and the new Castlevania(but who the fuck knows when those will come out)other than that, I haven't seen anything that I HAVE to have, but those two games alone will make me get a DS. I'm gettin the PSP becuase it actually has games I want right now.
Pisces
Fucking Lumines rocks out. I love that game. I play it more then Ridge Racer, Wipeout, MGA, and TM
LiquidViper
Have you ever played REZ for PS2?PLAY IT NOW!
-=[xeriak]=-
So it seems Vinney loses in this one....... Its true that the DS doesn't have any good games out or available like right now. All I got for my DS is Feel the Magic XY:XX (and even that is very boring).
But the PSP has alot of good games out so far..... tho I'm not into Wayne Gretzky games..... (wtf do we need sports games for when you can go do REAL sports in real life?? Tho the SSX Tricky series is an exception)
LiquidViper
Basically, the way I see it is that Nintendo had better have something really good in their back pocket for the DS otherwise they're fucked.
Kario
Well, they already announced WiFi for the DS, which is pretty awesome.
Right now, they are neck and neck, DS was first and people who are gamers bought it, and then PSP is for all those who....well, for some reason want to watch a video on a tiny screen and listen to music along with being able to play games. I already have a DVD player and a computer, and none of the games interest me, so blah.
Pisces
the PsP's screen is fugging enormous.
Kario
PSP Pixels: 480 x 272
My TV Pixels: 1706 x 1259
Why the hell would I want to watch a movie on the smaller one?
LiquidViper
Are you not getting it? As far as games go, right now DS has NOTHING! The biggest/best game DS had launch was Mario DS and I already played the fuck out of Mario 64 when it came out almost 10 years ago. I can look at their list of games right now and most of them have gotten solid and mediocre reviews and none of them SELL a DS to ME.
DS was first and people who are gamers bought it, and then PSP is for all those who....well, for some reason want to watch a video on a tiny screen and listen to music along with being able to play games.
That is one of the most assinine things I've read in a while. Don't even try to classify gamers since you obviously don't have a clue as to what it really means.
PSP Pixels: 480 x 272
My TV Pixels: 1706 x 1259
Why the hell would I want to watch a movie on the smaller one?
Yeah, the PSP screen maybe 1/4 the res of a TV screen but what's does that matter? The PSP isn't JUST for watching movies, it's merely a feature built in if you WANTED to.
Well, they already announced WiFi for the DS, which is pretty awesome.
Show me games that make me care that it has WiFi.
Here is my thing:
When you strip it down to a bare bones system that just plays games, so far the PSP has games that I actually want to play. I don't fucking care what features it has, dual screens, plays movies, whatever, if it doesn't have a single goddamn game that I want, I'm not wasting a penny on it. I haven't looked at what's coming up for the DS but like I said, Casltevania and Viewtiful Joe are the games I'd want. Other than that, I haven't seen a single title that looks even remotely impressive. I'm sure Lumines alone is worth getting a PSP for, what game can make you say the same about the DS?
Pisces
Get ready for Pokemon WiFi and Animal Crossing WiFi
yippe.. or something.
The DS is as bad as Virtual Boy, they made it, released it with 3 games and forgot about it.
Not to mention the VB was a great tool for getting out of school sick after playing it for 4 hours
LiquidViper
We win, Pisces.
Iron_DragonLord
That's right your cool.
cm763
Why the hell would I want to watch a movie on the smaller one?
Yeah, the PSP screen maybe 1/4 the res of a TV screen but what's does that matter? The PSP isn't JUST for watching movies, it's merely a feature built in if you WANTED to. It's still one of their big selling points...they pimp the fuck outta the fact that it plays movies.
That is one of the most assinine things I've read in a while. Don't even try to classify gamers since you obviously don't have a clue as to what it really means. You say this, then you say...
I'm sure Lumines alone is worth getting a PSP for Uhm...sure, Lumines is cool and all, but not "buy a PSP" cool. And i realize in the rest of the crap you posted you talked about more than just Lumines, but still, that doesn't take away from the fact that you said Lumines is worth buying a PSP for.
I can look at their list of games right now and most of them have gotten solid and mediocre reviews Okay...followed by...
and none of them SELL a DS to ME. Thats fine. I'm sure the people at Nintendo aren't losing any sleep over the fact that you're not one of their customers.
Well, they already announced WiFi for the DS, which is pretty awesome.
Show me games that make me care that it has WiFi. I'm asking this as a serious question, cause i don't know the answer...what games does the PSP have that have WiFi capabilities, and why should I care about them?
And finally...
We win, Pisces. That alone makes you a loser. There are no winners when it comes to arguments on GSX. Or the internet in general, for that matter. No winners whatsoever. o_O
Oh, and just to make it clear, i'm actually neutral on the DS/PSP thing. I just found it funny what y'all were sayin, and had to include my 2 cents. And if ya don't agree with me, well too bad. =P
~Cheaty
Edit:
Almost forgot...
Get ready for Pokemon WiFi and Animal Crossing WiFi
Am I the only one who remembers Animal Crossing as being a huge seller?...especially with the gurl gamers? If ever there was a game to attract the gurly-gurl type female gamer, or the younger female gamer, this would be it. And pokemon? There's the sound of damned near every elementary school kid's parents crying at the fact that they're gunna be spending a bundle of cash on the DS and like 50 incarnashions(sp?) of the pokemon game. Sure, I dont like those games (much like i'm assuming you dont), but still...Nintendo is gunna be makin mad cash cause of those games. So make fun of them all you want, i dont think the people at Nintendo will be losing any sleep over you either. o_O
Iron_DragonLord
lmao, that's my cheaty I used to remember, ah the good ol' days....
LiquidViper
Lumines is enough to make me buy a PSP. As far as everyone else, I don't fucking know. From what I've read, people have said Lumines is a fucking great game.
WiFi, I could care less. It won't make me buy a DS and that alone wouldn't make me buy a PSP since I'm fine with gaming online with my XBox.
My whole argument on this whole thing is that I'll buy a system if it has games that I want. I just get irritated when asshole lil' fanboys try to say one thing isn't worth buying becuase the company they like "knows games".
Iron_DragonLord
My whole argument on this whole thing is that I'll buy a system if it has games that I want. I just get irritated when asshole lil' fanboys try to say one thing isn't worth buying becuase the company they like "knows games".
Kind of like what you're doing?
cm763
I just get irritated when asshole lil' fanboys try to say one thing isn't worth buying becuase the company they like "knows games".
Sounds to me like you just hate Nintendo, since its' the company with the most loyal fanboys...particularily vocal fanboys, often times. But i mean, really, you can hate or like a system or company for whatever reason you like, i'm not here to judge you...just poke fun at ya every now and then. =P
I had more to say here, but i'm talkin ta someone on msn and lost my train of thought...i may edit this post later. o_O
~cheaty
Vinney
Coffee....Ninja...?
I dont' think it matters, people who will buy a DS with buy a DS. People who will buy a PSP will buy a PSP. We may think one is a waste of money, but they think the other is a waste of money. Buy what you'll buy, state your opinion and leave it at that. No one can say one is better than the other because it's all opinion.
And opinions can't be right or wrong.
cm763
Uhm...yeah. Very well said Vinney.
But, with all that said, i own a DS but would still like a PSP, and the only thing stopping me from getting one is a lack of money. The DS came out first, around christmas, which allowed me to get it as a present. Good job on Nintendo's part there, definately prolly planned that move, and prolly released the thing early or sumthin just for that (cause really, since when has Nintendo been remotely good with release dates? I mean, sure they're no Blizzard or anything, but still, heh). Umm...okay, thats about it from me.
~cheaty
Leeesher
So, being a girl gamer myself, I'd have to say that the only reason I'm sold on the DS is because of Animal Crossing and Harvest moon (and perhaps some zelda..) . If nintendo hadn't promised those I think I'd go psp.
The boyfriend and I almost bought DSs before we went on a trip for playing in the airport and such.... but then we realized that there aren't any games for it. It was pretty sad.
Iron_DragonLord
Whoa, you people need to look into the DS more!
I bougt my DS for pictochat and the metroid prime demo!
Kario
The demo is OK. The multiplayer sucks since it isnt actually multiplayer. You are both on the same map, but you cant see or kill each other.
Pictochat is fun, but if there is someone in the room without a DS they get really pissy.
Vinney
Way to needlessly take stabs at people
Surtsey
You're all fucking morons because you're arguing about something so god damned useless I'm not sure anyone with a life would give a shit.
Go kill yourselves, tards.
And by the way, speculation as to which system is better isn't bright - mainly since you can just go fucking look at sales figures you peabrains.
Iron_DragonLord
So should we look at sales figures for Linux and Windows?
Surtsey
Let's pretend that either Linux wasn't free or that the Nintendo DS was, go ahead and look at the sales figures. What would that tell you? It'd tell you which one appealed to the masses.
Now let's look at growth statistics.
Iron_DragonLord: Don't fiddle with me, you're such an inferior being it's stupifying.
Iron_DragonLord
You're just offended I brought up a very clever point.
Surtsey
Yeah, that must be it.
Maybe you should read my post a few more times?
Iron_DragonLord
I read it once, and I would more, except unlike the person who claims to think this arguement is stupid, I actually don't give a crap.
Surtsey
02:03 <@Surtsey> http://www.gamingsocietyx.com/forums/showthread.php?p=92448#post92448 OWNED!
02:04 <Iron_DragonLord> what
02:06 <Iron_DragonLord> so what interesting thing is by you
02:06 <@Surtsey> ...you should be slapped when you try forming english
sentences like that
02:06 <Iron_DragonLord> NO
02:07 <@Surtsey> DOUBLE OWNAGE1
02:08 <Iron_DragonLord> BACKATCHYOU
02:08 <@Surtsey> lmao we should flood the thread
02:09 <Iron_DragonLord> well except i kind of ended it
02:09 <@Surtsey> yeah.. bastard.
I think that pretty well describes the hidden humour here.
Iron_DragonLord
I'm speechless.
Gotex
i bought the psp two weeks after it came out i fell in love with it haha i bought world tour soccor, darkstalkers, BLEACH (import), Luminous, Dynasty Worriors. altogether when i first got the psp + 1 game and the 256 memory card it came up to about 600 bucks but well worth it

-=[xeriak]=-
Gotex, hows the Bleach import??? Is there alot of Japanese text/voice in it?? or is it very playable for a japanese language illiterate??? Like I got Naruto 2 and Naruto 3(imports) for Gamecube... and I manage to get around the game menus and stuff..
BWSword
what do you guys consider the favorite psp so far...
radiokid
I found this tipic interesting, I know it's old, but I want to know what many of you have to say about this particular subject, now that it's been a while longer, and more/better games are out for the DS. Plus, with all the added news of son cutting down on the PSP's that they are making ,and the DS still pumpin' 'em out.
I own a DS, and a friend has a PSP, it's a cool little device, but not the gaming handheld I'd like. The DS has some sweet games lined up, and I'm getting splinter cell, kirby, and maybe bomberman soon. PLus all the Mario Kart onlinea ction later this year. Sweetness.
I heard the PSP has a lackluster amount of good games coming soon, but there are a few good ones to be had I'm sure (GTA, anyone?)
So, what do you think abut the two handhelds now, that we all had more time with them?
BWSword
I recently brought a ds with the deal with mario 64 for $150. I also own a psp but I'm sure looking forward for also splinter cell for ds and for psp gta. :D
radiokid
Yeah, you lucky bastard, the electric blue DS with mario 64 for the same price is a sweet deal. Ah well, mine was an x-mas gift, so it's not so bad.
Right now in my collection is Mario 64 DS, Warioware Touched!, Need For Speed Underground 2, the metroid prime hunters demo, and thats it. But also residing in my DS's GBA slot is Final Fantasy: I+II "Dawn of Souls" I&II. I just started playing it again yesterday after need for speed frusterated me and made me switch to a GBA game, I finally got further on FF II. :P
Gotex
right now ive bought one other import game for psp along with the games i already have....... newer games i have bought where stand alone complex, ds is great and have a lot more fun titals coming out but im still a huge psp fan ^^ this site has alot of import games and....cosplay.......... www.toysnjoys.com
BWSword
burnout is coming soon that should be a big hit for psp as well as gta
Gotex
oh yeah, nope not alot of japanese text at all all the menu text is in english and about the most japanese stuff you will have to read is hmmmmmmmmmm is when you buy your cards to unlock new characters.........but thanks to the psp isos i now have bleach 2 and tales of eternia english version!!!!......oh yeah sorry i got back to you rather late haha
