View Full Version : Hacking your GameCube

I felt sorry for nintendo, so I posted a topic here to even out the...unevenness of this forum...

So go ahead, put linux on gamecube, it'd be one hell of a feight.

heh..... I believe the GameCube will be cracked soon. But it'd be even sooner if those hackers would get off their lazy asses and actually not think of the GameCube as a kiddy system.

First off.... Groups have been successful at ripping data off those mini-DVDs. I believe they may have used the Broadband Adapter for the Gamecube or some other means via a Serial port beneath the GameCube.

However, there is no current way of playing the games back yet cause of the way the GameCube works(reverse engineered in a very smart senile way) and because of the GameCubes mini-dvd drive.(it reads backwards)

What has to be done is the following:

A) Crack the GameCube's Encryption Key and the BIOS RC4 Key

B) Develop a modchip that would be fitted inside the Gamecube, which'd bypass the Gamecube's old BIOS instructions and allow it to run unsigned code and possibly defeat the mini-DVD protection convention(ever notice those fancy barcodes on the bottom side of a GameCube disc??)

C) Somehow get any DVD-R burner to burn GameCube isos in a reverse fashion... Also that may be a hard task.... However, maybe with the modchip, we could just burn the ripped GC game data normally with some customized GC Image creation tool(usually Scene groups will develop software, probly something similar to the Xbox ISO tools)

Anyhow... thats my views and ideas.... We already can buy the 1.5GB Mini-DVD's.... Ritek was selling them a while ago.... if they can still be bought. So in all cases, we would have the appropriate media to play back the games. If all fails with cracking the GameCube.... Then we'd all have to blow alot of $$$ and buy ourselves a Panasonic Q GameCube....(as piracy would be easier on that plus the addition of a full fledged DVD Drive)

As for linux on gamecube..... I hardly think its possible unless we had some external storage source modified and connected to one of the GameCubes hi-speed ports... But somehow I think thats not possible at all as those ports are proprierty. Also the GameCubes hardware convention and setup is not like a PC... Unlike the Xbox....

I think the hardest part would be the modchip. I personally think the actual burning of the discs would be relatively simple, involving software that flips the disc, bit for bit (although I'm sure the same reads, SOME PART of the software at some point forward, to thwart piracy.)

Either way, the gamecube shouldnt be considered a kiddy console. Its got 2 times as much processor as the ps2, and look what those damned hackers did for that pos so far. Although ps2 actually has licensed linux and such, and thats cheating. Xbox runs a desktops linux, not some shit made for consoles.

form what i hear around my home city is the gamecube is a kiddie system and a waste of time tring to hack becouse with all the stuff u can do with the X Box y would u wanna fool with it.....the game cube is for the children lets leave it to them.....it would be crazy if one of those childern hacked it before any of us god a good grasp of it......that would be funny

Xbox rocks Gamecube's world, definately. But seeing the alternative, ps2, I'm surprised people haven't decided to give gamecube the ora of being a badass machine.

And for being a kiddie system, Capcom sure chose to do one nice (and gory) upgrade of all the resident evil games. Don't you think?

the gamecube has been hacked. a friend of mine successfully reverse engineered it (he's a computer engineer at a highly respected university ((the same one i go to :-))). Anyway, the way he did it, is that there's a hole in PSO, and you can get access to the system through that game. Im not sure EXACTLY how he did it, but he said he use'd PSO's flaw.

Sounds like he exposed something known as a buffer overflow. It's some sort of memory glitch when people who don't know how to program properly open massive wounds in existing software. It's how people are getting linux on unmodded xboxes.
